Module Review: Scale Mastery
+100 XP
Advanced Scales
Subscribe & LearnAt the Elementary level, you learned major scales in 5-7 keys across one octave. The Intermediate level demands mastery of ALL 12 major scales, ALL 12 minor scales (in three forms: natural, harmonic, melodic), the chromatic scale, and two-octave technique with velocity and evenness. This module systematically builds that mastery through 12 progressive lessons. By the end, you will play any scale in any key at sight — the technical foundation required for all Intermediate and Advanced repertoire.
Harmony
Subscribe & Learn7th chords, diminished and augmented chords, ii-V-I progressions, voice leading, suspended chords, secondary dominants, and harmonic analysis.
Harmony
Subscribe & LearnHarmony is the vertical dimension of music — what happens when multiple notes sound simultaneously. While melody moves horizontally through time, harmony creates the chords, progressions, and tonal relationships that give music its emotional depth. This module takes you from basic intervals to complete diatonic harmony: all interval types, all triad and seventh chord types, voice leading, Roman numeral analysis, secondary dominants, and real-world progressions in Classical, Pop, and Jazz. By the end, you can analyze any piece's harmonic structure and build your own chord progressions from scratch.
Reading Mastery
Subscribe & LearnSyncopation, compound time, 6/8 and asymmetric meters, advanced sight reading in both clefs, score navigation, and transposition at sight.
Reading Mastery
Subscribe & LearnSight-reading — the ability to play music you have never seen before — is the skill that separates self-sufficient musicians from those who need weeks to learn every piece. At the Elementary level, you learned to read single notes and simple rhythms. This module builds true Reading Mastery: reading by PATTERN rather than note-by-note, reading in all 12 key signatures at sight, reading chords and polyphonic textures, handling complex rhythms including compound time, and reading lead sheets and chord charts. By the end, you can open any Grade 3-4 piece and play a recognizable version on the first attempt.
Musical Styles
Subscribe & LearnClassical period, Romantic era, Chopin, blues, jazz, swing rhythm, pop, and ballad playing techniques.
Style Exploration
Subscribe & LearnPlaying the right notes is elementary. Playing them in the right STYLE is intermediate. A Bach Invention played with Romantic rubato sounds wrong. A Chopin Nocturne played with Baroque articulation sounds lifeless. This module teaches you the specific performance practices — touch, pedal, dynamics, tempo flexibility, ornamentation — that make each historical period and genre sound authentic. You will explore Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionist, Jazz, Blues, Pop, Latin, Film, and Folk styles, building a versatile performance vocabulary that lets you approach ANY piece with stylistic intelligence.
Advanced Technique
Subscribe & LearnVelocity, double notes, octaves, trills, advanced pedaling, una corda, half-pedaling, forearm rotation, and tone production.
Advanced Technique
Subscribe & LearnScales are horizontal technique — playing notes in sequence. This module builds VERTICAL and SPECIALIZED technique: arpeggios (broken chords spanning the keyboard), octaves (power and endurance), trills and tremolos (rapid note alternation), finger independence (each finger operates autonomously), chord technique (accurate jumps and voicing), pedal mastery (all three pedals in depth), and double-note playing (3rds and 6ths). These are the technical tools demanded by Intermediate-to-Advanced repertoire — Mozart sonatas, Chopin waltzes, Beethoven sonatinas, and Debussy preludes all require them.
Blues & Jazz Foundations
Subscribe & LearnI-M4 introduced you to jazz and blues. This module makes you a jazz/blues PLAYER. You will master the 12-bar blues in all its variations (basic, quick-change, minor, jazz), improvise over blues changes using a systematic vocabulary, learn rootless jazz voicings that sound professional, develop comping independence (rhythm + voicings simultaneously), and play through your first jazz standard. By the end, you can sit in with a jazz combo, accompany a blues singer, or improvise an entire blues chorus on your own.
Accompaniment Patterns
Subscribe & LearnMost real-world piano playing is accompaniment — supporting a singer, playing with a band, providing background for a school musical, backing up a choir, or accompanying a family member at a celebration. This module teaches you to be a versatile, reliable accompanist who can read a lead sheet, create appropriate LH patterns for any genre, follow a soloist's rubato, balance dynamics, and handle the practical challenges of live collaborative music-making.
Transposition & Lead Sheets
Subscribe & LearnThe ability to play any song in any key — at sight — is the skill that separates a versatile pianist from a limited one. This module builds on I-M3 L10 (introduction to transposition) with systematic mastery: transposing melodies, chord progressions, full arrangements, and lead sheets into all 12 keys. You will learn modulation techniques for smooth key changes and develop the reflexes to transpose on demand for singers and ensembles.
Ornaments & Embellishments
Subscribe & LearnOrnaments are the jewelry of music — they decorate, embellish, and enliven melodies. From Baroque trills to jazz grace notes, from Classical mordents to gospel runs, ornaments add personality and style to your playing. This module teaches you to execute all standard ornaments correctly, understand their historical context, apply them to repertoire from every period, and eventually create your own ornamental vocabulary.
Recording & Self-Evaluation
Subscribe & LearnThe Intermediate level concludes with the skills that ensure CONTINUOUS improvement: recording yourself, evaluating your playing objectively, tracking progress over time, and presenting your best work. This module builds on E-M5 (Performance Skills) with more sophisticated recording techniques, deeper self-evaluation frameworks, and a comprehensive final exam that assesses all skills developed across the 10 Intermediate modules.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about this level
Do I need a real piano or keyboard to start?
While you can learn theory concepts without one, we strongly recommend having at least a 61-key keyboard. A weighted or semi-weighted keyboard will help you develop proper finger technique from the start.
How much time should I practice each day?
We recommend 15-30 minutes daily for beginners. Consistency matters more than duration. Short, focused daily sessions are far more effective than occasional long practice marathons.
Can I skip levels if I already have experience?
Yes! Take our placement assessment from the Learn page to find the right starting point. The assessment evaluates your reading, rhythm, and playing skills to recommend the best level for you.
What if I get stuck on a lesson?
Each lesson includes practice exercises, a mini piano, and related resources to help you. You can also replay lessons as many times as you need. The interactive quizzes give detailed explanations for each answer.
Are the lessons suitable for children?
Our curriculum is designed for learners aged 12 and up. Younger children may need parental guidance for some theory concepts, but the interactive exercises and games are engaging for all ages.
Will I learn to read sheet music?
Absolutely. Reading music is integrated throughout the curriculum starting from the Beginner level. You will progressively learn to read treble and bass clef, rhythm notation, key signatures, and more.
What styles of music will I learn?
The curriculum covers classical foundations, pop, and introduces jazz concepts at higher levels. You will play real pieces from various genres as you progress through the modules.
