What the AI Piano Coach hears

The coach follows the score while you play. Every note you press is judged against the sheet music in real time, correct, wrong, or missed, then the whole take is analyzed the way a teacher would review it:

  • Accuracy per hand, right hand and left hand are graded separately, so you know which one to isolate.
  • Trouble measures, mistakes are mapped bar by bar (“most of your errors live in measures 9 to 12”).
  • Rushing & dragging, your effective tempo is measured against the target, globally and passage by passage.
  • Hands together, the coach detects when one hand lands ahead of the other, even by a few milliseconds.
  • Hesitations, long think-pauses before a note reveal where your reading breaks down.
  • A practice plan, one click sets the suggested tempo or parks the playhead on the passage to drill.

What chord is this? Instant answer while you play

Wondering what chord you are playing, what a note is called, or what interval you just heard? Arm “What am I playing?” in the coach panel and play anything: the coach names the note (with its frequency in Hz), the interval (minor 3rd, perfect 5th…), or the full chord, major, minor, 7th, sus4, add9, inversions and slash bass included, and can say it out loud. It even recognizes scales and modes when you play more notes.

The chord identifier is fully offline and instant. There is no lag, no round trip to a server, and no sign-up needed to try it: press a chord and read its name. It handles enharmonic spelling correctly (Eb, not D#, in the right key), omitted fifths, altered tensions, and it tells you the bass note for slash chords, for example G7/B or C major 7 in first inversion. Musicians use it to name a chord they found by ear, to check a voicing, or to learn the theory behind what their hands already know.

Everything the AI Piano Coach does

  • Real-time mistake detection, wrong and missed notes flagged against the score as you play, per hand.
  • Tempo and rhythm coaching, whether you rush or drag, globally and passage by passage, with the effective BPM.
  • Trouble-measure mapping, your errors clustered bar by bar so you know exactly what to drill.
  • Spoken feedback, the Professor talks you through the take in a natural voice, like a real lesson.
  • What am I playing? instant chord, note, interval, scale and mode identification for anything you press.
  • Play with me (duet), you play one hand, the Professor performs the other, following your tempo and touch.
  • A practice plan and prescription, one click sets the suggested tempo or loads a targeted warm-up for today's weakness.
  • Progress memory, the coach remembers past sessions and tells you what improved and what to work on next.
  • 3D Concert Hall, sit at a grand piano, float note names on the keys, and play "repeat after me" ear-training games across five levels.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI piano coach?

An AI piano coach is a tool that listens to your playing (here through MIDI or your computer keyboard), compares it to the sheet music in real time, and gives teacher-style feedback: wrong notes, missed notes, tempo problems and what to practice next. PianoMode’s coach. The Professor, also speaks its feedback out loud.

How does it detect wrong notes?

The score you see is parsed into an exact list of expected notes. Each key you press is matched against that list at your position in the piece. A wrong pitch flashes red on the staff instantly, and the coach logs it, with the measure and beat, for the end-of-take verdict.

How do I find out what chord I’m playing?

Click “Identify my notes” in the coach panel, then play the chord. The coach names it instantly, for example C major 7, D minor 7 in first inversion, or G7 with the fifth omitted, lists the notes it contains, and can pronounce the answer.

Do I need a MIDI keyboard?

A MIDI keyboard gives the most precise feedback (timing and velocity), but everything also works with your computer keyboard or the on-screen piano, nothing to install, it runs in the browser.

Does the AI Piano Coach work for beginners?

Absolutely. Start with the generated beginner drills or an easy song, play slowly, and The Professor grades one hand at a time so nothing feels overwhelming. It shows you exactly which notes and which measures to work on next, so a complete beginner gets the same clear, patient guidance a first teacher would give, while advanced players get all the finer detail they need.

What can I practice with it?

Generated sight-reading drills (scales, chords, progressions, arpeggios at any difficulty), the built-in song library, or your own MusicXML/MIDI files uploaded to the trainer.
